Interview blog Operations

Georgina has been working at a top marketing tech company for over 7 years. She started off as a Campaign Manager and is now their invaluable Operations Manager managing the business’ pre-sales strategy using unique tech tools to deliver audience insights to top brands. She also writes a lifestyle blog in her spare time and is an expert in finding the best brunches in London.

  • How would you describe a typical day at work?

I can’t do anything without coffee first thing in the morning, our office is pretty great as we have a big kitchen with tons of food (that alone is a good reason to work in media) as well as a bad ass coffee machine, so I make myself breakfast and eat at my desk whilst checking emails. The rest of the morning is spent replying to emails that came in late from our US team, or I’m in meetings brainstorming ideas for upcoming projects with the sales team. After lunch I crack on with the brand insight reports that need doing, these can take time, so I can usually only fit in about 2 per day. I sit with a bunch of super fun people, so we tend to have in depth chats re Stranger Things or dissecting the latest Tinder messages throughout the day. I finish at 6pm, but on Friday we finish at 5pm, and the alcohol fridge is “unlocked” at 4pm (it must stay locked at all times as things otherwise get out of hand).

  • Any challenges?

The acronyms in digital land are mad! We can have entire conversations using only acronyms and it all makes perfect sense (except to me but I have a great poker face) – “make sure the DSP is feeding into the DMP properly because the CPI wasn’t hitting the client KPI last week”. #facepalm.

  • What type of brands do you work with?

All kinds! From automotive (my least favourite) to food and beauty, every day is different which is one of the main things I love about my job. I create brand reports leveraging our tech to help clients build cleverer ads which target the right people at the right time.

  • What are the main qualities required to excel in your job/industry?

The digital marketing/tech industry changes constantly, you really need to keep track of latest innovations, who are the big players (Facebook and Google for now, but watch this space!) and how you can help brands make the most of these changes. I’d say keep yourself well informed through Google alerts and site notifications (The Drum for example), be proactive and take up any training that is offered.

  • What do you do to relax outside of work?

Netflix and actual chill. Also, brunch is bae. I have a huge ongoing list of brunch spots that I continually add to as new places open etc., it’s become quite the guide here at the office!

  • Favourite food spots near your office?

Ooh good question! I work in between Holborn and Covent Garden so I am spoilt for choice. Healthy options include The Black Penny, Farmstand, Itsu and Abokado. If I’m hungover, or basically any excuse, it can range from Homeslice to various foodie markets in the area (current fave is the Yorkshire Burrito at Street Food Union).

  • Any tips for graduates wanting to work in your industry?

Media is still a relatively young industry and as such there isn’t really a specific list of skill requirements (unlike more creative roles for example), I learnt everything I know whilst on the job. As long as you prove you can be proactive, have good organisation and time management skills as well as being a charismatic and sociable person you’re in with a strong chance of being hired! Having a strong grasp of the media lingo and general industry knowledge is key too.

  • If you weren’t doing this fabulous job what would you do?

My dream job would be working as a beauty editor at a swanky women’s magazine, testing beauty products for a living. I work a lot with L’Oreal in my current job so sometimes I just pretend they’re my real bosses.

  • How do you cope under pressure?

I tend to work better under pressure, if I don’t have much to do I tend to feel lethargic and end up not even doing the bare minimum. Once the pressure is on I just put my favourite lipstick on and plough through the day! Luckily everyone I work with is very supportive and we’re all friends, so if I were really struggling I know I can rely on someone to help me out.

  • Any desk gadgets you can’t live without?

I am the queen of gadgets! Currently on my desk I have a SAD lamp that I flick on from 9am to 12pm. Any longer than that and it can affect your sleep routine. I sit quite far from a window, so I need all the sun I can get! I also have a mini fan that works via USB, a plant (I spend 10% of my working day tending this thing as it dies all the time), a bouquet of fake peonies from eBay and two copper wire stationery baskets for my bits and pieces. It’s a girly desk for sure.
